3D-Printing Conversation: Elliot Kotek & Dr. Joseph Beaman

On March 30, 2015, Medical Innovation Labs (MIL) hosted the second installment in their speaker series that highlights the visionaries building the future of healthcare. Our esteemed guests were Elliot Kotek and Dr. Joseph Beaman.

Elliot Kotek is content chief and co-founder of Not Impossible Labs, an initiative that seeks to create low-cost, open source, DIY solutions to improve lives. With Not Impossible Labs, Kotek stewarded a project called Project Daniel, which creates 3D printed prosthetic limbs for children of war-torn Sudan. Dr. Joseph Beaman, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, is the pioneer of selective laser sintering (SLS), one of the earliest forms of 3D printing.

Together, the pair brought unique experience in 3D printing—its reaches, limitations, and potential impact—and represented the smartest minds in the nation ushering in this transformative new technology. Over the course of an hour, they discussed emergent developments in 3D printing and gave attendees a glimpse into the future of care, as printed by machines.
